Can Claiming Bankruptcy Discharge Student Loan Debt?

Image
From: OnlineColleges.net When Oquendo , a resident of Kissimmee , Fla., left her job as a photographer at Walt Disney World after she developed carpal tunnel syndrome, she decided she would go back to school "to better" herself. She heard about Full Sail University , a Florida-based , for-profit college specializing in the entertainment industry with many courses online. Oquendo enrolled, hoping to learn about new photo technology and design programs like Photoshop. To pay for it, Oquendo took out a private student loan . A few years later at age 46, she's $33,000 in debt with no degree. She's struggling to make payments since she also has fibromyalgia, is on disability and is unable to work as much as she'd like. "I wish I just could go back and undo everything," Oquendo said. "Knowing then what I know now, I would have never taken out the student loan ." Oquendo had to stop taking classes when her own health deteriorated. At the ...

My Home Town By The Numbers

Presented By: BestCollegesOnline.com Chicago  public-school teachers have  suspended  their seven-day strike and look set to approve the compromise reached by their union and the city. So, who won? The best way to approach the question is to look at the main points of contention, one by one. -- Money. The agreement calls for raises totaling 7 percent over three years, with an option for another 3 percent in year four. This is vastly short of the 30 percent over four years the Chicago Teachers Union had initially asked for, and even less than the 16 percent over that period Mayor Rahm Emanuel  says he had previous offered. While this may look like a victory for the city, Chicago teachers will still make more than most peers in other big cities, and the prospect of a potential $300 million in extra spending over four years during hard economic times isn't anything for Emanuel to celebrate. Plus, employees will continue to receive seniority-based bonuses (as o...

Put Together By: OnlineUniversities.com Utah State University ’s newly-established Center for Human Nutrition Studies was awarded its first grant. The center, a contract research organization at the university, has already begun work to design and conduct clinical studies as part of a value generating system within USU. Financed by the Utah Department of Health and the Diabetes Prevention and Control Program, the grant was given to Senior Dietitian Sheryl Aguilar on behalf of her proposed diabetes and pre-diabetes programs for seniors 60 years or older. “It’s a two-prong program,” Aguilar said. “The first is prevention to help seniors stay healthy and avoid getting diabetes. The second is intervention to help seniors manage their pre-diabetes and diabetes. We are looking to target the seniors at risk for diabetes and those with it already.” Aguilar will collaborate with USU dietetic students working on practicum hours, offering the education courses at the Cache County ...

Rethinking The Freshman 15

Compiled By: MedicalBillingandCoding.org College students talk about the “ Freshman 15 .” That’s the typical number of credit hours a full-time student takes during a semester. Some also claim it’s the number of pounds students gain eating dorm food and studying all night. New work from researchers at Washington University in St. Louis confirms that most students do, indeed, gain weight in college. Reporting in the Journal of American College Health , the research team found that about 70 percent of students gained a significant amount of weight between the start of college and the end of sophomore year . “It wasn’t surprising,” says principal investigator Susan S. Deusinger, Ph.D., professor and director of the Program in Physical Therapy at the School of Medicine. “Normally, eating habits in this group are not great. Most don’t eat five fruits and vegetables per day, and many don’t get enough exercise.” In exchange for measuring their height and weight and asking the...
